What say you, fellow builders, about pre-made necks? A pre-made neck saved my latest build, but I ordinarily wouldn't rely on them because it feels less creative to not carve my own necks. Anyone else got an opinion?

There is no cheating really, as there are no rules, as someone already may have mentioned. But if you are building for somebody else, you could maybe consider their preference as well. Makes it more personal, and challenging to build.
I have done both, and prefer building my own, despite mistakes, especially for 3 and 4 strings.

I started this thread 6 months into this obsession. I wrote: "A pre-made neck saved my latest build, but I ordinarily wouldn't rely on them because it feels less creative to not carve my own necks."
It's now been a year since I started making CBGs, and I can say my opinion has changed significantly. Three- and four-stringers aside, I do not have the necessary tools or "shop space" to make decent 6-string necks. I have realized that pre-fab necks are a necessary evil. And it turns out I'm pretty okay with that.
That is all.
I agree with the consensus here, it is up to you what you do. There are no rules.

I think making box guitars is all about having fun - so 'what ever floats yer boat' - me I like to scavenge and salvage all my parts , so any pre made commercial necks that go on my rough and ready creations have been pulled out of dumpsters or surgically removed from critically ill guitars destined for the bin.
If I can't find what I'm looking for I have to make it!
I've taken a neck from a tenor banjo and used it in my build and it is my favorite instrument, even more so than my (other) tenor banjo. It also helped me with learning about scale to swap a prefab neck and proceed with the build especially as a novice. I have another neck scavenged from a busted guitar that I will probably use in a build soon.
But I am also trying my hand on making my own necks. Simple ones at first, but each time I build I am trying something new. I bought some tambourines at the goodwill online auction, and I am ready to make a tenor banjo and a ukulele as soon as I get the garage cleaned up and a small workshop set up.Right now I split between the house for gluing and clamping a struggling to get to the workbench in the of the garage for the woodworking and carving.
Guess I am in the no rules camp...
P.S
I dont think I'd buy a neck though, just scavenge from another broken instrument.
NO RULES!
I've built both ways and enjoy them equally.
To paraphrase M. A. Rothschild, Give me an instrument with soul and I care not who carves its neck.
NO RULES!
