Would that be wide enough for a mandolin neck?

Not unless it is a bolt on neck. The Mandolin has a scale length if 13 in or so and the headstock is roughly 6 in That would be 19in from the tip of the headstock to the bridge. If you plan to put the neck through the body it will need to be at least 24in roughly.
