When using a Strat style hardtail bridge,is the string tension and tone different (better, worse or indifferent) when stringing through the box to the bottom of the box or stringing straight to the bridge backplate? I know there's more work involved in running the strings down through the box....

Hi, I think it would make a noticeable difference in the acoustic box.
. As these styles of bridges are designed for solid-body electric guitars you will mount the bridge on a block between the top and bottom of the box, to prevent the tension of the strings from trying to crush the box. This of course will kill much of any acoustic response. If you have a through piece in the box that the neck is connected to or it's a neck through design, then you could add a small block between the top and between the bottom to give a sturdy construction. Then drill through the body using the bridge plate as your template. Then add string ferrules on the bottom of the box.
This will keep you from getting inside the box unless you make a wood block connected to the neck/through piece and have the box swing top on the bottom of the guitar that would swing open to allow access to electronics.
The added structure will increase sustain, but will kill off some of the acoustical properties. That can be a good thing or a bad thing.
Thank you,Paul...

Exactly.
Feel like I cheated with this old strat style neck I had laying around for years. I wanted to get 3 strings on something while I studied up more on making a neck. This one allowed me to ponder different options & make changes. Not sure if I will actually add the pickup that I had planned to use. May not ever completely finish this one. I am busy working on the next one with a proper homemade fretted neck.
Looks great.

I was wondering how you attached the neck...A couple of screws,maybe?...
Four screws, like a strat. I have a mahogany heel that stick out. Only two of the screws are visible from the outside. I'd snap a pic, but I haven't yet gone back & sanded & finished the heel.
When you get to thinking about all the different ways to build a CBG, there are a lot of details to work out.
Finding different ways of making a CBG is part of the fun for me...Thanks for the info.
