I made one out of the bell of an 18in Zildjian crash cymbal, cut it to 6 1/2 diameter with a jigsaw using a brand new metal cutting blade. Haven't strung up the instrument yet, but it seems to me with the thickness of the brass it wont sound like a Lowes reso cone, however, it might just produce a cool lower end baritone type sound. I made it while I was waiting for Lowe to send me one of his cones. I'm thinking that it will sound best used with a larger sized cigar box. I'll post a picture later today.
Seems a cymbal would work well. The main thing to consider is that when mounting it into the guitar body, there has to be a bit of space between the bottom of the thing and the back of the guitar. This to let the sound waves reflect off the back and then "out" so you can hear 'em.
If you look at my page, you'll see how I mounted the cooking-pan resonator in mine, by placing it on slotted rails.
That works well; there are many other approaches.
Yeh, later I'll post a picture of my 6in aluminum pot lid reso creation.

I'm interested in how this turns out. I'm a bit skeptical of how great it will sound. Cymbals are extremely heavy compared to a resonator cone (take from a guy who has to listen to his cymbal players whine all through Marching Band season). In any case, I think the best result would be from strings with the most tension on them to really get that thing moving. Good luck. Who knows...you might just be on to something here.
Unfortunatly, I have no cigar box yet. I am preparing for a build my firend wanted an origonal chuck davis cigar box resonator ukulele so i figured a cymbol would be cool i hanbd pounded it
