Nick, about the riff, I'm not a picker,,, not really into playing a lot of notes... started life as a "bassman", so rythmn and building a strong bass for the song are important to me, so .... it seems I take an obvious bass line and play simple chords on top of it to produce on (almost) hynoptic rythmn. Very little rythmn changes unless it gets faster thru out the song and that just my Adult ADD kickin' in.... hehehehehehehe.....
