excellent. I'll have to hunt down the ebay piezos you mentioned...I did buy a few weird sized ones from an electronics store, thought I'd try those and see how they work. Psyched to see your builds. Am trying to finish my recent one. will post when done. ET
I'm bumming that you didn't have good luck with the RadioShack piezo --- I gutted mine out of the plastic casing (found a method that gets it out with zero damage to the ceramic or brass disc) and sandwiched it between some dense foam double stick... I used blue painter's tape to allow me to move it around on the neck...after a few different locations I found that just ahead of the bridge sounded strong and with less errant unruly harmonics... so seriously, maybe try a few more pkup placments before chucking it out...seemed tiny distances made big changes in tone.
it was the dialing in of my Blues Junior amp that made the difference. I turn the bass, mid, treble way down to about 2-3 to tame pingy microphonics -- then made micro tone tweaks brought out some zing...and there's my general sweet spot...but I also sometimes go through my Dunlop wah and cock it in the brightish range...totally smooths out the signal like a compressor but allows me to find a banjo-like scoop -- and shockingly, my original TS-9 with the gain way down and the tone knob dialed back actually works for its own more controlled tone.
So maybe don't give up on the cheapo piezos quite yet...I swear with some experimentation in mounting style (I gooped mine in black Plasti-dip and mounted it to a square of cigarbox liner) and placement you can make them sound pretty darn great --- and I just love the idea of using such a low-budget POS pkup --- I'm telling you I SHOCKED a bunch of players at Guitar Center when I plugged straight into a 4x10 Bassman reissue combo -- not with my playing, but with the swampy usable tone I got. Several real players came into the amp room and said "WTF. that's awesome" when they found it was just a 2.50 cent buzzer as a pkup. Just sayin'...peace. ET
I just saw the sweet black box build you posted...very nice and classy... have you strung it up yet --- wait, I just saw a shot of it with strings...or is that shot just for show? did you put a piezo in it or a mag pick up? looks solid as a rock.
as for the amp thing --- what about finding a beat to heck amp (like a little solid-state Frontman Fender starter amp (or any kind, but I've just been playing through a friend's old crummy 5 or 15 watt Fender kid's amp and it's got perfectly decent tones and you could destroy it without any guilt) but then carefully unmounting all the guts out of the thing and remounting them into your new box? just a thought to get a funky amp together quite fast without having to learn to wire an amp from scratch...

I agree about this being addictive.
