A change in the build.

After doing some tapping on the top with and without the bridge support I broke it off. It dampened the sound from the box by a good 1/3. I'll wait to try it again when I make a box out of 1/8 ply.

Yes I started on a diddley bow but can't bring myself to make a one stringed instrument. I"m a coward...LOL Instead it'll be a 3 string meant to be played like a 2 stringer. The two lower strings will be close together for cording. Leaving the higher string free for slide use.

I… Continue

Got started and hit a snag...LOL

Finally started my first build. It'll be out of a 10 3/4 x 6 1/2 cigar box instead of a box I build myself. Be a 3 string fretless. Got me some bone to cut into the nut and bridge. Got everything going and then hit a snag. Even though it'll be fretless I'd still like to mark the frets. Went to 'fretfind-2D and printed out a 22 fret 24 scale fret board. Just to get a 23 fret 24.5 scale pic. It doesn't matter what I program the thing to give me. It always send me a 24.5 scale neck. LOL So I've… Continue

I have everything I need to start, just aint started....

Still reading thew articles both on this site and others. On everything from the pros and cons of an internal resonator, bridge placement, piezos, materials for nuts and bridges..and the list goes on. Yep you caught me. I’m a geek who likes to have all my ducks in a row before I start. LOL For me the challenge is the best part. I’d be no fun at all to just toss a stick of wood on a box and…

1/2 step forward....

Well got all the tools I need. And found a place for wood. Sorta. They're only open wile I'm at work. Been working Sat's as well. They're closed on Sundays. Drove all the way there today to find that out in person. Oh well. LOL Really itching to get started on a first build so I can have something to post about. Seems like every time I check this site out there's 300 more hand made cigar box guitars. I'm kinda falling behind here. LOL

Going to get a pound of fret wire from…

Not much progress and some thoughts.....

Even though I have wood I can glue together to get a nice neck I'm still looking for a source for more. Everywhere I go it's the same story. They can get it but it'll have to be ordered in. Which means I'll be stuck buying wood without seeing it first. Don't like the idea at all. It's not just wood I'm looking to get. It's a part of a musical instrument. Something I'm going to build and play. Means a lot more to me than whatever they decide to ship. I know of one lumber yard 40 or so miles from… Continue

onward.

I found the top piece to that buffet. Like the rest of the piece it was machine made out of scraps. Mostly good woods. The back of it is a usable 9 1/8 x 41 3/4 x 3/4 of mahogany. SWEET! It also has a large slab across the top of maple. 2 1/2 x 43 1/8 x 1 1/4. I'm hoping the 5 or 6 niles in it are the only things holding it together. I haven't come across any glue yet when doing repairs to the buffet itself so I'm hopeful this will come apart easily.

One note for anyone who's… Continue

It's a start.

Got a load of cigar boxes and 6 tuners off of Ebay. Three of the boxes are kidna small. I'll use them to store things in. Or figure a way of combining two of them to make a different looking body. Now to find some decent wood for necks. Got to thinking. I go to auctions quite a bit. Every once in a wile there's damaged old furniture that goes cheat. That's how I got the buffet I have now. It looked real bad when I picked it up for $1. Looks great now. Was thinking it be cool if I could come… Continue

Guess it's a bit about me.

Grew up listening to classical music. Didn't start listening to rock till the mid 70's. I heard bands like Yes, The Moody Blues, Steely Dan, Lead Zeppelin. Went from listening to Mozart to playing air guitar to every Kiss album I could get my hands on. LOL Got my first guitar for Christmas 1976 and life hasn't been the same sense. Rock and more rock. Love speed metal, heavy metal, thrash... Favorite group? Seplutura!!! Also totally dig Jazz. Have a big collection of bebop, post bop and some… Continue
