I went to a woodworking show here in Michigan over the weekend and picked up two pieces for fingerboards. They are both about 2-1/2 w x 3' long and 1/4" thick. One is Rosewood, the other I never heard of is called Ziricote. Thought I'd share.

Randy,
Will letcha know.
The locals in Easton PA call this stuff Blood Wood.
But it is soft as white pine and a nasty maple variety. ( 'cause it attracts bugs)
Haven't gotten any pieces to the fully dry stage in my shed. Wanna try to use it but...But... It is just too early to tell what it might develope into.
That is another story.

It is supposedly toxic to breathe in.
(I Can vouch for the sawdust itch portion of that myth.)
Who else has first hand coments?

Has anyone worked with Box Elder (or is it Alder). It has interesting red streaks when green. I have some short burl pieces from an old trunk drying in the shed but it seems too soft for much. Just curious whether it is worth the shed space it occupies.

Try The Hardwood Store of North Carolina. I haven't been there in a while but they all kinds of wood & they will ship to you. I have no connection with the store except it's a few miles from my house.

Bob, nice idea for using wood pallets for CBGs.

Hey Bob!
How I've done it in the past I'll take my prybar and gently break off the boards that have the sharp ends in them and after that you'll be able to knock the tips through enough to pull out with a hammer. if this still breaks it, take a small made-for-steel drill bit and just drill it out. The hole shouldn't look drilled out anymore than if you had just yanked out the nail.

Hope this helps!

Nice finds!. I live in Yuma and have been thinking about heading out to the desert to find a few ironwood logs I could use...just not sure if I want to give up that many saw blades :D

And I have a Jacaranda growing at the end of my driveway, and one of my friends just bought a house with one in the backyard that he just had trimmed. Wish I had known their wood was so beautiful or I would have saved his cuttings! The one in my yard has been cut back to a stump at least once and come back...has me wondering if it would do that again.....

Has anyone used epi or juniper? I have been playing with juniper only because I have access to a sawmill and lots of juniper. The first neck I made was quarter sawn and worked pretty well. The second was from our juniper Christmas tree and it is a bit week.

Epi is a South American hardwood. I have a bunch left over from a deck and am thinking of turning it into fret boards.
