Hi folks,
I am looking to step up my game a bit and have started integrating a separate fretboard into my last three builds. It has helped immensely to straighten the neck and it also improves the action at the same time. Win-Win!!
But... finding appropriate woods is not all that easy, even in Toronto. Or maybe I am not looking in the right places. So I thought I'd ask.
So far I have been using 0.25" x 1.5" oak boards from Home Depot; these definitely work but the grain is a bit loose and I would like to explore other options if possible.
I have a tablesaw and a belt sander but I'd rather work with finished woods if possible so as to keep the build time reasonable. I am hoping to build up some inventory over the winter and take a bunch of these to some festivals over the summer, I think they'd be popular, and I have fun building them as well.

That guy has some really nice items. Any idea where in ON he's located?
not sure, but you can always ask...the listing will have a place to contact the seller
bezdez is up by sudbury. in " chelmsford ontario"
OK, got my Bezdez rosewood in the mail recently... It's a lot rougher than I had anticipated. What's the typical method for finishing these to make a fretboard? Belt sander? (got one) Planer? (not)
The picture looks like the rosewood is pale, but I use them, and they finish dark and nice.
How do you finish these, by sanding or planing?
both planing & sanding
i live in a smaller town ,, lol we used to have 5 lumber yard / stores .. only have 2 now .
Home Depot is about my only choice for f boards when i need that type . if you find the oak too loose , try the poplar . we are lucky out here in canada , and get the good poplar , not mostly green ,yellow pissy stuff like the states get alot of .
;-)
I wouldn't have thought poplar durable enough, but I just might give it a try, thanks.
i think the poplar is easier to work with than the porkupine oak ,
and nothing a light sanding doesnt take care of after the first coat .
you can even leave it after lightly sanding the first coat for that rustic look . .
