Ok, I rip cut a piece of hardwood flooring and now I'm trying to figure out what kind of wood it is. Here are a couple picture of it fresh cut...

The little section of wood on top of it is Red Oak, so I am not totally sure what it is....

To me it looks like Walnut or Mahogany....

Looks like mahogany to me.

Would Mahogany work for a 2 string Bass neck with a square steel tube in a channel under the finger board made of Red Oak?

3/4" thick piece of mahogany should be strong enough for the two lighter bass strings without reinforcement... I made a 2 string bass out of poplar, 30" scale...No separate fretboard... Worked fine.

I am no expert, but I have pieces of walnut  and  mahogany on my bench..  walnut has a much finer grain and is less red.

Ok, you have me doubting myself.  Either way, should work fine...

Looks like Iroko to me,sometimes used as substitute for Teak

Hey Michael, I looked up Iroko and came across Merbau which looks allot like what I have.

It also goes by these names too Kwila & Ipil.

Common Uses: Flooring, furniture, musical instruments, turned objects, and other specialty wood items.

Comments: This wood has excellent strength characteristics, along with excellent stability, making it ideally suited for use as wood flooring and other applications where strength is important.

I have had training at identifying [wood] from quite a long way away. I'd say it is.....

The larch.

The larch.

Well watch out for those white stripped Snipes, I hear they have a powerful smell...

The Larch... Great answer

Thanks.  I knew someone would get it.  :)

I did but didn't respond because I'm trying not to be seen
